MixMaster Music Conference is a music community event that brings local artists and music industry professionals together to share information, connect, collaborate, and showcase some of the best local talent that the Lawrence and Kansas City region has to offer. Now entering its fourth year, MXM2017 is expanding to become a part of KKFI’s Crossroads Music Fest, with increased support from the local music industry and the goal or reaching more audiences and industry across the Kansas City region.

11am: Panel: The Ten-Year Overnight Success

Independent artists can achieve a lot by setting goals, planning and being creative with their time and efforts. But what does successful goal-setting actually look like? How does it work, and what does it take to persevere?

12pm Panel: Building Your Team and Building Your Brand

Being a successful independent artist requires a wide variety of skills, a lot of different resources and plenty of hard work. What are the essentials to telling your story and being ready to respond to opportunities? Who can help you and how can you help yourself?

1pm Working Lunch: Small Groups

Breaking into small groups, participants will get a chance to share their experiences, test out ideas and learn from each other’s knowledge. Each group will be facilitated to ensure everyone gets time to talk and moves from one topic to the next. Lunch will be provided by Californos (while supplies last!)

A chance to submit your demo to be listened to live and followed by honest feedback from music journalists and industry experts. Bring your best stuff on a CD!

A rapid-fire round of networking! 5 minute blocks of one-on-one connections with industry experts, venue-managers, radio DJs and more.

1pm: Workshop: River Trade Radio Presents: Tips for Successful Radio Submissions

Learn the ins and outs of getting your music in the hands of DJs… and then getting the airplay! Radio programmers are inundated with mounds of CDs from both artists and management agencies. We’ll cover what an independent artist needs to know: from the basic first steps of how to effectively package your music, how to create a “one-sheet” (uh, a “what-sheet?” Now you know you need to be here!) to tips and tricks for following up.

Kasey Rausch offers a unique perspective as both an independent musician as well as producer and host of River Trade Radio, a weekly two hour roots music radio show airing Sundays from 9-11am CST on 90.1FM KKFI Kansas City Community Radio. She is a Kansas City native and 5th generation music maker who tours nationally with The Country Duo. Their first EP, “Live at Sun Studio,” the sound track to the nationally syndicated PBS television series Sun Studio Sessions, is available now at TheCountryDuo.com

2pm Panel: Music in Public Spaces

Libraries and other public spaces have become locations for music-making, places to access technology, and venues to share and celebrate music. What is it like for the artists who work in these spaces? What makes it work, and what is the future of music with public and shared resources?

Panelists: Jim Barnes (Lawrence Public Library), Ralph Tomlinson (Olathe Public Library), Donna Mandelbaum (KC Streetcar Authority)

4pm Discussion: Art As Mentorship

Enrique Chi, the leader and songwriter of Making Movies, will discuss and showcase work from his Art As Mentorship project, a program that will take twenty young songwriters through a year of artistic development.

For six years Making Movies has hosted an inner-city music camp through the Mattie Rhodes Center. The students and experiences from the camp became the inspiration for the Art As Mentorship program. The band’s story and community efforts were just featured on a beautiful NPR piece which you can listen to HERE.
